Iceland grieves after police kill a man for the first time in its history
Dec. 3 2013
"The nation was in shock. This does not happen in our country," said Thora Arnorsdottir, news editor at RUV, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service.
She was referring to a 59-year old man who was shot by police on Monday. The man, who started shooting at police when they entered his building, had a history of mental illness.
It’s the first time someone has been killed by armed police in Iceland since it became an independent republic in 1944. Police don’t even carry weapons, usually. Violent crime in Iceland is almost non-existent.
"The nation does not want its police force to carry weapons because it’s dangerous, it’s threatening," Arnorsdottir says. "It’s a part of the culture. Guns are used to go hunting as a sport, but you never see a gun."
In fact, Iceland isn’t anti-gun. In terms of per-capita gun ownership, Iceland ranks 15th in the world. Still, this incident was so rare that neighbors of the man shot were comparing the shooting to a scene from an American film.
The Icelandic police department said officers involved will go through grief counseling. And the police department has already apologized to the family of the man who died — though not necessarily because they did anything wrong.
"I think it’s respectful," Arnorsdottir says, “because no one wants to take another person’s life. “
There are still a number of questions to be answered, including why police didn’t first try to negotiate with man before entering his building.
"A part of the great thing of living in this country is that you can enter parliament and the only thing they ask you to do is to turn off your cellphone, so you don’t disturb the parliamentarians while they’re talking. We do not have armed guards following our prime minister or president. That’s a part of the great thing of living in a peaceful society. We do not want to change that. "

How hard is it to learn Icelandic?

One of their universities offers free lesson modules on their website and it’s well worth it. The process for moving there is slightly more complicated, but it would still be worth it. any country that has universities that offers degree programs focused on “Philosophy, Politics, and Economics” is a country that is awesome.

☼ Hufflepuff Common Room

“It was round, earthy and low-ceilinged; it always felt sunny, and its circular windows had a view of rippling grass and dandelions. There was a lot of burnished copper about the place, and many plants, which either hang from the ceiling or sat on the windowsills. The overstuffed sofas and chairs were upholstered in yellow and black, and the dormitories were reached through round doors in the walls of the common room. Copper lamps cast a warm light over the four-poster beds, which were covered in patchwork quilts, and small copper bed warmers hung on the walls, in case of cold feet.”

This is so beautiful and I’m not even a hufflepuff.

…could I switch houses? please? o.o

While Ms. McKenna “did not ‘abduct’ the child,” the court said, “her appropriation of the child while in utero was irresponsible, reprehensible.”

Sara McKenna, a former Marine, became pregnant during a brief relationship with Bode Miller, an Olympic skier. While seven months pregnant, she moved from California to New York to go to school, leading a judge to scold her for “virtually absconding with her fetus.” Now, the fight for custody of their son has become “a closely watched legal battle over the rights of pregnant women to travel and make life choices.” (via bebinn)

(hi! this was turning into talking so… hi. I have SWEU feels too.)

I DO NOT TAKE WELL TO AUTHORS EXPECTING ME TO LIKE CHARACTERS. NEVER. UGH. The only times I came close to liking Luke was when Leia/Mara/Han/Someone/Anyone was hitting him to make him stop being so whiny.

Jacen in YJK was earnest and adorable and you know the segment of tumblr that does nothing but tell really bad knock-knock jokes and puns and cute-and-or-terrifying animals? THAT WAS HIM. THAT WAS HIS CHARACTER and then the NJO happened and just, what? UGH he was gone and change it was like it was a polyjuiced person of evil who was trying to cover up his murder, and that was the point when I stopped trusting Lucas (realistically, Phantom Menace should’ve given me warning (my feelings about the prequels are complex and contradictory but I will cuddle all of them except for Phantom Menace) but I was blinded by childhood). Anakin was and always will be the best. Part of the joy of not reading NJO is that I can pretend that he just said “fuck everything” and is flying around the galaxy because he is done dealing with Lucas and all of the bad choices that happened.

JAINA IN YJK IS AWESOME IN A DIFFERENT WAY I REALLY HOPE YOU LIKE HER BECAUSE SHE IS AWESOME AND I REALLY REALLY REALLY ADORED HER. Not quite as much as Tenel Ka, but the Hapen ladies have this weird thrall-inducing power over me because power and ladies and the Hapen Cluster okay, FEELINGS. I always wanted to be Teneniel or Tenel Ka, personally. The fact that my hair wasn’t red wasn’t about to stop me—neither was the lack of force abilities or the lack of a cluster to rule.

Star Waaaars

Hi! I’m always here for conversations about Star Wars. It is literally my life.

Seriously fuck Luke. I love every moment that Mara is just flat out not taking his shit. Although nowadays I am so disappointed she ended up with him. Once upon a time, I was behind that ship. Now I hate it a lot. Simply because Luke. She should run off with Mirax Terrik. I ship them like fucking Fedex, just sayin.

I have heard about Jacen and his jokes and his affinity for animals in YJK which I’m pretty sure I can get behind. I never had any other reference for Jacen except NJO because I basically read all of Zahn’s books out at the time and went straight into NJO. So I’ve basically hated Jacen since the beginning of my time with the EU. Same with Zekk. I’ve never been fond of him because I hated how he interacted with Jaina and a person’s reaction to Jaina was pretty much my standard means of measuring the worth of said person. But I know that people have said he was better in YJK. So we’ll see.

And I am so very very here for Anakin just noping right out of there and doing his thing around the galaxy, possibly taking up his father’s former trade and becoming a smuggler because I think he’d be great at it. The most conscientious, moral smuggler ever but a damn good one nonetheless. I love that a lot of the NJO authors made a point of really building up Anakin’s character and giving a glimpse of what could have been as a giant Fuck You to Lucas because Anakin deserves better.

I have no positive feelings for the prequels. I liked Phantom Menace when it came out and I was like 10 but I remember walking out of the theater after seeing Attack of the Clones and just being so fucking angry about everything and hating it all. At which point I got into the EU. Which is somewhat contradictory but you know when in doubt, go to the books. It’s almost certainly going to be better in my opinion.

I love the Hapans. They are so fascinating. There’s so much potential in them for exploration of gender roles and history and just generally ladies being badass and in control and I love it. I never really got too into Tenel Ka because she doesn’t show up too much in NJO and then in DNT she’s basically Jacen’s love interest and sometimes Queen Mother and I wasn’t interested in that bullshit. But I’m thinking YJK will probably fix that so all the more reason to be excited about finally getting there.

Mirax/Mara? Now that would be very interesting to me. I don’t really ship Mara with anyone because…. I don’t know. I used to actually ship her with Lando (I have a very, very, very, very extensive headcanon for Lando) and Tendra, but that was about it. Would you mind elaborating on the how and why and things of your ship?

If that was how you ran with the books, then yeah, oh my god, hating everything is a good bet. Anakin ran a little bit towards the All Powerful All Knowing Gary Stu in the pre-NJO books, but he was so endearing and Jaina was awesome at being his older sister and the whole Solo children dynamic was pretty much the best thing ever. Zekk…. I have Zekk feels. Fanfiction happened and I was an impressionable teenager, okay?

Anakin would have been an amazing smuggler, and he would’ve been the type of smuggler who would smuggle freedom and liberty into places and then sneak past victory parades because justice waits for no one! This is what happened. There was a wormhole or a force flux or something. He survived and escaped Lucas’ grasp is all I am saying.

My history with the EU went Zahn EVERYTHING (Mara! Shada! Leia!) to… a lot of really random things. The NJO hadn’t come out yet (I feel so old saying that >.>) so I read things like The Crystal Star (do. not. touch. that. thing.) and the Han Solo Trilogy.

The prequels get cuddled by me because of the extreme levels of sass in them. I can and will go on rants that last for days about everything regarding the plot, the choices, the everything—but Anakin and Obi-Wan sassing everything is delightful to me. I am so glad that Lucas is gone now. >.< THE BOOKS ARE ALWAYS BETTER

The Hapeeeennnnssssss I am still so mad that we don’t know more about them. Cut-throat slightly evil machiavellian politics and kick ass warriors of all the genders and culture and THEY CAN TAKE PEOPLES HEADS OFF WITH SHIELDS BECAUSE HAPEN CLUSTER and it’s fabulous and flawless and oh my god I want you to love Tenel Ka, Lauren. We are in a mutual follow and we don’t really know each other but I am awash with EU feels right now and it is overwhelming me and this is how tumblr yelling friendships begin i have seen it.

Luke is… something. I am displeased with him basically all of the time, no matter what. I actually never read the NJO *because* of Jacen. I got partially through Vector Prime and ended up throwing it against a wall and never went back. :/

Luke is the kind of character that you’re just supposed to like because he’s the hero! Which means that he’s kind of all over the place and actually a massive dick but we’re supposed to agree with everything he does because he’s the hero and the first of the New Order so he must know all! Which I don’t buy in the least and so hate almost everything he does.

Jacen is a piece of shit in NJO and I hate him because he spends the entire series focusing on his completely unimportant philosophizing and then ends up being the big hero of the series and lol nope I am not here for that shit. Anakin was set up 1000000x better as the new leader of the Jedi once Luke steps down and the fact that Lucas ordered the authors to kill Anakin instead of Jacen INFURIATES ME.

But I fucking adore Jaina in NJO. Like I read those books when I was 13 and there was nothing in the world I wanted more than to be Jaina. So NJO will always have a special place in my heart simply because of her.

But I swear to god, every person who says Traitor is better than Dark Journey IS ON MY SHIT LIST FOR LIFE.

I might have some SWEU feels.
